.

Contraception options are many and depend on the individual.

If you have high BMI blood pressure, suffer from focal migraine, smoker or have history of thromboembolism, you need to chose progesterone only method or hormone free method. This is because your risk of thromboembolism (blood clots)will be higher with a combined pill

Options are :

1. Natural Method. This is when you go by the date in menstrual cycle, avoiding intercourse around the time of ovulation.

2. Barrier methods – condoms for man or Diaphramg for woman

3. Pills : there are 2 type

Combined pill : contacted 2 hormones, oestrogen and progestogen

This is taken daily for 21 days with a 7 day break, within which you have a withdrawal bleed or one might say a period

Advantage – can control when period comes. Can take back to back to avoid a period if for example you are on holiday. Helps make periods lighter and less painful. Some other benefits include helping PMS and also helping acne

Disadvantage - risk of thromboembolism, so cannot sue if already have risk factors such as smoker, high BMI>30, high blood pressure, migraine of the focal type (ehere you have visual symptoms ). Small risk of breast cancer

It is a hormone, so also get hormonal effects of weight change, mood change and skin changes with some breast swelling and tenderness

-other type of pill is minipill. Contains just progestogen. Doe not have the oestrogen ( which is the one responsible for risk of blood clots and breast ca
