Copper Coil Removal and New Fitting

The copper coil is a small, T-shaped plastic and copper IUD (intrauterine contraceptive device). It releases copper to prevent pregnancy and can provide effective contraception for between 5 and 10 years. It’s a suitable contraceptive option for anyone looking for long-lasting, non-hormonal protection against unwanted pregnancy.

How does it work?

The copper coil releases copper into the womb. This alters the cervical mucus, making it more difficult for sperm to reach an egg and survive. It can also prevent a fertilised egg from implanting itself. It is a non-hormonal form of contraception.

Copper coil removal and fitting

If your copper coil has reached the end of its effective life but you wish to continue with this form of contraception, then your existing copper coil will need to be removed and replaced with a new one. Many people will opt for private coil removal to enable them to have the process carried out at a time and location that is convenient for them.

The removal process is simple and should only take a few minutes. A speculum is inserted into the vagina, and the clinician will locate coil threads that are coming through the opening of the cervix. The clinician will then gently pull on these threads with forceps to remove them. If the threads are not visible an ultrasound may be required to locate the threads. A narrow instrument is inserted into the cervix to locate the threads and then continue with the removal process.

Once the old coil has been removed a new coil can be inserted. A copper coil can be fitted at any time during the menstrual cycle and provides immediate protection against pregnancy.

Both the removal and fitting process is usually very straightforward with few potential side effects. You may experience some mild discomfort during the procedure, and some women experienced period-type cramps afterwards which can be eased with painkillers.

You may bleed for a few days after your copper coil has been fitted. If you experience pain or discomfort the procedure can be stopped at any time.

The removal and fitting procedure should each take around five minutes in most cases, with appointments lasting longer to ensure that you are comfortable and any concerns you may have can be addressed.
